Been wondering why BtRL has been quiet lately? Sick of no updates? Wondering why half the team lost their Dev badges?
Wonder no more!

woha... he drops the bomb. it feels like that on my side, actually.
another bsg-game that makes use of the fs2 engine, partial releases, images of colonial one and a raptor ingame... this looks promising. and makes me wonder: whats going to happen to btrl when most of the talents are now taking care of another mod?
but this isnt your concern/interest anymore, so those questions would be obsolete.
i wish you all the luck you can get for your new project.
the guys involved already made proof of their great talents, so this HAS to be good

Sick of no updates?
abolutely.
especially to kara: sorry for my long academy absence, but reallife is a bitch (i rarely have the time to read this forums). im still interested in fredding and ill send you my mission the next few days (if i can find a day on which i dont fall asleep the moment my ass hits the couch after work). dont know what happened to those campaign plans, but i want to have someone who knows this stuff to have a look at my work
p.s.: nice fred quiz on hlp. very enlightening.
again, all the luck you can get for your mod!

Long before BSG Pilots was a general BSG fan site it was the primary place for players of the game "Beyond the Red Line" who met in our chat to arrange games.
However, BtRL turned out to be made up of the worst leader in the history of game development, a truly idiot of a person, as well as several others who disrespected the fans like no other dev team in the history of gaming, and well...it's not surprise that this led to their demise.
BSG Pilots and the 9th Battlestar Group is proud to support Diaspora, and officially stop our support for Beyond the Red Line.
Unofficially our members may do as they please.
To read more of my responses to this news, you can see my post
here
and
here
on the official forums of the new mod.
You can also check out the announcement I made on the homepage of the
9th Battlestar Group
Kara, I am so happy to hear this news and to see you back in action. As I said, BSGP and BSG9 fully support you and Diaspora. I just hope the mistakes BtRL made never happen again, and I'm pretty sure they wont happen cause from what I can tell Diaspora was created BECAUSE of these mistakes.
Best of luck. I will be posting a News article about this asap for the Fleet News Service here, and in the future, we'll be covering news regarding Diaspora on a regular basis.
Now the Gaming Department of our Fleet News Service actually has some things to talk about!

I'm glad of the support but remember that the BtRL demo is still one of my babies and although there wasn't enough to sustain long term interest it would serve very well as a teaser for what Diaspora will be like.

To be fair I don't think anyone in BtRL ever said that. That said no one denied it when the fans talked about it. Personally I'd rather be more open about when we hope to have stuff done rather than keeping everyone in the dark but I'll have to check with the team to see how they feel about publicly setting a provisional release date (We have one internally already of course).

Thanks for the update fellas...I knew about BTRL and have played it...I just didn't know Kara's involvement...
I am super excited to see Diaspora and I officially add my support also (for whatever it's worth). I'm not a programmer in any shape or form but I got a good voice and I can write and post like a mother frakker about it everywhere!

Hey A-Dog...you are the Head of the BSG Pilots Fleet News Service...and we do have quite a viewership, so your support IS important
Kara, the demo was nice but it did have its flaws. It is after all one of the primary reasons BtRL gaming clans such as BSG9 and The Cylon Base failed. And the biggest problems in that demo were the multi-player lag as well as the lack of capital ships.
The lack of respect of the BtRL Dev team towards fans and the lack of updates and communication also were a big part of the demise of BtRL, but the demo itself was flawed. I hope the Diaspora Dev team has learned from all these mistakes and will not repeat them.
Having said this, it is already evident that the Diaspora Dev team is aware of past mistakes in BtRL and looks like they are striving to not repeat them and change their ways
As for the release date...it was NEVER a concern for many of us. Final release date could be in 2019 for all I care. The important thing was to not let down your faithful fans and to award them for their faith and loyalty. THat meant making period releases of new content, no matter how small itmight be. Say a couple new ships, a new mission pack. Not very hard to do really.
If you want to see a GREAT mod team who does a great job of keeping their fans updated and making very frequent releases is First Strike, a BF2142 mod for Star Wars.
Anyways, I have faith that Diaspora is on the right track. After all it seems to have split from BtRL for exactly those reasons that made the fans abandon BtRL.
So I wish you all the best of luck, and know BSGP and BSG9 fully supports you

Might as well address those two immediately as I can do it without giving much away
In my experience in going from fs2_open 3.6.9 (which the demo was based on) to fs2_open 3.6.10 (which Diaspora is based upon), lag is cut approximately in half due to a much more efficient back end for networking - It doesn't disappear, and one still has to compensate for it to a degree, but it is nothing like 3.6.9 where you sometimes had to lead ships by half a screen width to hit anything.
And as for capital ships, oh, you are in for a treat
Release one will have both warships and civilian vessels of various makes to kill or be killed by.

The standalone code is also being worked on. I promised it for 3.6.10 and I'm going to try to keep to that.

Posted this over on the developer blog but I figured that since it answered a few questions that will probably be asked over here, I'd post.

October 3rd 2008 - Release Details
Now that all the FREDders are in a position where they can start making missions it's time to reveal a little about what they'll be doing.
The first release will be called Shattered Armistice (although the team will probably just keep referring to it as R1 informally). Since we're trying to get the game out for you to play as quickly as possible it will be a short (4 mission + training) campaign but pretty action packed. The story will follow the Battlestar Theseus as the crew fight against the Cylons during the attack on the Colonies. The Theseus is an older Perseus-Class Battlestar built after the end of the first war with the Cylons. In the campaign you will get to fly the Mk VII against Cylon forces including the Raider, Heavy Raider and Basestar.
Multiplayer fans will also find a lot for them in the first release. A standard set of Coop gauntlets, TvT and Dogfight (Deathmatch) missions will be included but more complex matches involving battles between Cylon and Colonial capital ships will also be available. Players will be able to fly both Colonial and Cylon fighters against each other or work as a team against AI enemies. The Raptor and Heavy Raider will also be player flyable. Work on the stand alone code is progressing nicely and we hope to have it working well before release.
Unfortunately due to the sheer amount of work that remains to be done we can't give any sensible indication of when we'll be ready to release. If we plug the gaps in our team with the people we've said we need on the recruitment thread we'll be done much more quickly than if we have to do without them. The team are committed to making regular updates however so that you can see the progress we are making.
We'll be including FRED of course and with a battlestar and basestar to play with you'll be able to fill in any gaps you think we've left.
We'll be taking the best missions and validating them for multiplayer too. Right now, the goal is to get something out quickly. We're going to polish what we do release so that it shines but we can't do a big release as most of our effort will have to go on stuff we no longer have (For instance the Interface)
However the biggest complaint from the fans (apart from lag issues) was that the demo needed capships so we're addressing that first. More ships and missions will come in R2 and R3. And with luck the time it takes between releases shouldn't be anywhere near as long as it will take us to get R1 done.
