The Music of Battlestar Galactica
«
on:
December 14, 2008, 07:33:53 PM »
Richard Gibbs and Bear McCreary have put out some awesome music for both the miniseries and for the series. The music for Battlestar Galactica is so non traditional, and unique that it stands out as being original in scoring for a soundtrack for a television show. I think it will stand the test of time.
That being said, what are your favourite pieces of music from Battlestar Galactica?
Mine are:
From the Miniseries
To Kiss or not to Kiss
Launch Vipers
The Storm and the Dead
Good Night
From Season One
A Good Lighter
Forgiven
Wander My Friends
Passacaglia
Kobol's Last Gleaming
The Shape of Things to Come
From Season Two
Colonial Anthem
Pegasus
Lords of Kobol
Prelude to War
Reuniting the Fleet
Roslin & Adama
One Year Later
From Season Three
A Distant Sadness
Precipice
Storming New Caprica
The Dance
Under the Wing
Fight Night
Kat's Sacrifice
Battlestar Sonatica
Someone To Trust
Temple of Five
Mandala in the Clouds
Death Bed & Maelstrom
Heeding the Call
All Along the Watchtower
Btw does anyone know the name of the music that was being played as everyone on the Galactica was sleeping just before Baltar tried to hang himself. It sounded like a childs lulaby
From Season Four
In Episode One, the music that is play in the first nine minutes for the battle sequence.
In the Episode titled the Hub, the music played during the nuclear strike on the Hub
In the Episode titled Revelations, the music that was playing when Starbuck discovered the signal to Earth, & when she was running to the airlock to stop Lee from spacing Tigh. Also the music leading up to the jump to Earth & the celebration music once they arrived. Also the variation on the Heeding the Call theme.

About time we had a discussion regarding the best score and best composer (McCreary) in the history of Television.
My absolute favorite pieces are in no particular order:
Martial Law
Passacaglia
Allegro
The SHape of Things to Come
One Year Later
A Distant Sadness
Death Bed and Malestrom
All Along the Watchtower
Kobol's Last Gleaming
Lords of Kobol
Reuniting the Fleet
Prelude to War
If I had to choose one piece of music which stands out as far as the best possibly match between music and scene on a Television show ever, it would be, without a doubt, Martial Law.
Martial Law matches PERFECTLY the scene in which Tigh takes command of the fleet and declares martial law in his speech to the press. It is by far the best music-scene match in the entire Series IMO.

My wife made fun of me for listening to the soundtracks when I go on trips...that was until she listened to one. It's hard to pick a list of favorites. But I'll give it a go:
To Kiss or Not to Kiss
Pegasus
Dark Unions
Colonial Anthem
Battlestar Operatica
Reuniting the Fleet
Battlestar Sonatica

According to Bear McCreary, there was not enough new music for Razor to justify a separate soundtrack, instead the music heard in Razor will be on the Season 4 soundtrack.
That being said one has to wonder if there will be enough new music for "The Plan", if there isn't will that be included in the S4 soundtrack

Well, like everyone else I can't really select a few...I love each and EVERY piece of music those two have made for BSG. Having said that I guess some of my favs are:
Mini Series:
Are You Alive?
Goodbye, Baby
-This signifies the first time we hear the trademark "bells" theme that always plays when Six is around...
A Call to Arms
Season 1
A Good Lighter
Passacaglia
The Shape of Things to Come
Battle On the Asteroid
Season 2
Colonial Anthem
- Re-done VERY well.
Allegro
Reuniting the Fleet
Dark Unions
Prelude to War
- Second most fav of all!
Season 3
Violence and Variations
- The BEST BSG song out there!
Mandala in the Clouds
Deathbed and Maelstrom
A Distant Sadness

What did you guys think of the music of Ep 414?
Honestly I was too shocked, too excited, too distracted to have noticed the score. Is this a good or bad thing? Well of course it's a bad thing, cause the music is meant to compliment the story, but either there wasnt much of a score in this ep or it wasnt prominent enough to be noticed.
Bear McCreary always said that as a music artist he has been given a huge say on the development of BSG episodes, and he has said, if I recall correctly, that as we approach the end the score is more and more intertwined with the story.
I just hope to see more great music like we heard in S4.0

well...it was mostly dark and melencolic patterns, tastefully made but no strong themes.
Personnally i think it's meant to be that way so you keep focused on the dialogues and all...
Big themes will be coming in the next episodes for sure!

I agree with you Skull, This episode had alot to get going. You wouldn't want the music geting in the way of that. I also think the lethargy in the score was neant to reinforce the loss of purpose and direction. I was hard pressed to find any new thesems, jusst echos of existing lines and lots of dischord. Going to be interesting to hear what's next.

Well folks, be on the listen for Zarak's theme as the seeds of revolution are planted. There seems to be a darker version of Gaeta's Lament brewing as well.
