After 271 days we've returned to a devastated Earth. Sometimes a Great Notion has many questions to answer and the writers wasted no time in giving us some answers.

The episode kicks off right where we left the landing party, presumably across the river from New York City. The scene explores many characters' reactions and painful realizations that they've traveled all this way and sacrificed so much for nothing.

Baltar and a slurry of human and Cylon science teams finally confirm that the Earth was indeed nuked some 2000 years ago and that there are apparently no survivors.

We see Dee on the beach as she discovers the remains of a pocket watch and a child's set of jacks. Roslin kneels and picks a piece of new vegetation from the ground. She and Admiral Adama leave to go back to Galactica, where, the entire crew is waiting to hear about Earth and what was found. On the Raptor ride home Dee is whispering to herself "Don't give up" over and over as Helo tries to console her. A distraught Roslin can't find the words and just walks away leaving chaos in the hangar deck.

Back on the Earth, Starbuck and Leoben search out the Colonial Distress beacon that lead them to earth. They find the beacon...but also discover a piece of Viper tail wing with part of Kara's viper number on it.

On the Galactica we see Athena and Helo playing with Hera as Dee shows up to babysit. As Dee holds Hera she is in awe of how innocent the child is and how she has no idea what has happened.

We see the Cylons and Humans unearth some remains. Shockingly there are skeletal and Centurion remains lying together in a site. Baltar and Six confirm that there are NO human remains on Earth, only Cylons. Earth was inhabited by "skin jobs" and centurions! The 13th tribe was Cylon! Roslin becomes silent and refuses to contact the quorum and the fleet with information.

Tyrol approaches a wall and notices an all too familiar silhouette. As he approaches the blackened figure and touches the wall he has a flashback. He is there many years prior. He is ambling along happily amongst a crowd of farmer's market shoppers looking for fresh fruits and vegetables. As he selects a piece of fruit and asks the teller how much, a blinding flash of light hits and he is instantly disintegrated against the back drop. As Tyrol falls out of his flashback he falls to the ground in shock. He now knows that the very place they've landed was his home.

Kara and Leoben continue their search for a viper...

Dee and Apollo have a talk about what has come before and what he will tel the fleet about Earth. They discuss their lives as husband and wife and Lee says "I couldn't have done it without you." Dee says "and you will this time too." Remember that line as you read ahead. Lee asks Dee if she'll have a drink with him later. She accepts.

Starbuck and Leoben find the cockpit of a Viper. In one of the most shocking moments in BSG history Kara lifts the charred remains of the pilot's helmet and sees - HERSELF!
Leoben becomes very afraid and flees from Starbuck as she rips her own dog tags from the pilots neck. Starbuck asks him "what am I" and all Leoben can say is he was wrong about everything.

Anders finds the remains of a guitar and suddenly realizes he was apparently a musician and one of his favorite songs was "All Along The Watchtower!" As he tells this to Tyrol, Tori shows up and says she remembers him singing it to her, the woman he loved.

Back on the Galactica, Roslin is burning her book of Pythia as Adama tells her morale is shot and they need to do something. He is upset because Roslin is skipping her cancer treatments. She tells him that they should have stayed and fought the Cylons long ago instead of running to Earth. As Roslin loses it she tells Bill to just go.

On Earth, Starbuck burns her corpse from the viper remains.

The younger married Adamas are walking the halls after their date. Dee is glowing as she and Apollo kiss goodnight. Dee goes into her quarters where Gaeta mentions something negative about Earth. Dee asks him to stay positive so she can feel happy for as long as she can. Gaeta leaves and Dee starts to hang up her necklace. She takes off her ring as she hums happily and smiling to herself. Suddenly, her facial expression goes blank, she picks up her sidearm and shockingly shoots herself in the head! Gaeta and Seelix rush to her side but it's too late for Anastasia Dualla.

Apollo is in the morgue as he holds Dee's hand. His father walks in and he asks him why she would do this? The Admiral looks at Lee and drunkingly says "I have no frakking idea!" and hands Lee the bottle (which he refuses). Apollo leaves and Adama hovers over Dee as he begins to weep and says "I let you down. I let everyone down!"

Adama then requests the sidearm of someone walking in the hallway and approaches Saul Tigh in his quaters and tells him "Sit down Cylon!" Adama tries to goad Tigh into shooting him. Tigh refuses and they talk things out a bit.

Aboard Colonial One, Lee erases the "1" from the survivor count as Starbuck shows up and learns what Dee has done. It's funny that Lee doesn't write a zero back in. He just erased 2/3 of the remaining humans!

Adama and Tigh go to the CIC and he asks Gaeta to find him the next closest habitable system. He asks Mr. Hoshi to inform the Cylons that they're leaving and they can join them if they wish. Adama tells the fleet that he intends to still find them a home...it's a promise he will keep.

As the ground teams prepare to leave, Tigh approaches D'Anna. She says she's staying on Earth instead of continuing to run , fight or be killed by Cavil. Tigh then wades out into the river where it appears he is led to a piece of debris that triggers a flashback. He is in a building as nukes are going off. He is trying to dig Ellen out as she tells him "it's ok, we'll be reborn!" Tigh comes out of his flash back and exclaims "Ellen...you're the Fifth!"

For those of you that can't watch the episodes on Hulu it is also available at the SciFIWire by clicking here. Both Hulu and SciFi Wire both have the episode with Commentary as well.

Here are the teasers for next weeks episode...

Wow what an episode! They wasted no time in getting some answers out there and I'm glad they did. I'm not excited by Ellen being the fifth, but I'm okay with it. Now we can get on with everyone's story ending...starting with Dee. Poor Dee. I never saw it coming and my jaw hit the floor for a minute or two because I couldn't believe what I saw! This episode dove headlong into the soup! Starbuck finding her dead self and Leoben being afraid of her was awesome as well. This episode kicked it into high gear and I'm afraid we're all in for one hell of a ride!

Like I said in the chat on Friday, on a Mindfrak scale of 1-10 this was a 15.

That whole thing with Dee, I did not see that coming.

Seeing Leoben shocked and awed about the truth about Starbuck was like wow, he just had all his preconceptions of her shattered.

This episode raised more questions.  Like how did members of the 13th tribe get to the colonies after the destruction of Earth.

One thing I can't stop thinking about is a saying from the second season "And the blaze followed them"

All in all I thought is was a great show and great start to the second half. I was extremely shocked to see Ellen as the FC. I thought she might be an older version of the 6 but never the FC. Once I got my mind wrapped around it it kind of makes sense. As for Dee, OMG that just totally blew me away. I never in a million years would have seen that one coming. The whole episode was just a million mile an hour ride with plenty of good plot fillers and more questions. I like the idea that the 13th tribe was a tribe of Cylons too. That was a real kick in the pants. Now was it me or did anyone else catch what the admiral said to the fleet? I’m not sure if I heard him right or not when he said the 13th tribe left a destroyed world into the black void of space, leaving a devastated planet behind. Did we miss something there or did a rag tag fleet leave Earth in search of a new home just like the Galactica fleet? I may be reading way too much into it but it is a cool thought.
My other big HUH? Is with Starbuck. WTF people? I was kind of expecting she did die or was captured by the BOL but never saw this one either. It also brought a thought of the harbinger of death thing. Anyone think her arriving at Earth is what caused its devastation? UFO enters the atmosphere and defense grids go up and the missiles fly. Either way what is she really? Is she a Cylon, a ghost, angel what? Things are already getting good. I really can’t wait till Friday.

I replayed Adama's speech to the fleet Adama said, "Men and women of the fleet, this is the Admiral, the discoveries of the past few days have been painful for all of us, as you know we cannot stay on Earth but this is not a new challenge.  The 13 tribes of Kobol stood exactly on the same spot as we are right now, they experienced dreadful losses, their planet was a graveyard, they needed a home, so they set out in the void of deep space, with nothing but their ships and their guts, and the 13 succeeded.  They weren't supermen, they were ordinary people, like us, what they can accomplish, we can accomplish, we will find a new home, this is a promise, I intend to keep"

When  Adama says "The 13 tribes of Kobol stood exactly on the same spot as we are right now, they experienced dreadful losses, their planet was a graveyard" I believe he was referring to Kobol and the original exodus

I just got back from LA. And yeah, I agree with knight here. On a 1 to 10 scale the shock factor was 15 for sure for this Ep. And with such high levels of expectations for BSG, that episode was just perfect. The only thing I dont really get is Ellen. But we didnt really get Tory too at the beginning, but she ended up being a perfect choice for FF. So perhaps Ellen will really be a great choice for FC too.

It was certainly incredible to end the Premiere episode with the revelation of the Final Cylon. At least we wont have to be afraid of being spoiled about the FC anymore, so that's a relief. And plus, RDM and co. have like 10 more eps to explain to us their choice for FC. So better now than later, as it gives more time to explain exactly why Ellen is the FC.

Knew it was a woman though...hehe

More detailed review will come soon. In fact, I am supposed to start doing video reviews on YouTube for these eps...so I might just do that.

The impression I got from Adama's speech was that it was a half heart buck up speech like the one from the mini. Trying his best to give hope again but probably failing. Notice that he tells everyone the 13th are humans like them and not Cylons.

Yea I did catch that. Now Adalla I would love to know what the reaction was like at the frack party when Dee shot herself. That must have been a trip. I can just imagine the hush and OMG's flying around the room.

It's been months since I've posted but I was incredibly busy (still am)!  I just HAD to start posting again since BSG is back!

I agree with everyone that Ep.11 was crazy!  My jaw hit the floor when Dee died and Ellen was reveled as the FC!

The big question on my mind is now, "what happened to Starbuck and what the hell is she?"
