Caprica Pilot to Hit Shelves 4-21-09!

In an unprecedented move by The SciFi Channel, it was announced today that the highly anticipated pilot episode of the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica will debut direct to DVD on April 21, 2009.

The SciFi Channel's official announcement was posted today at the SciFi Wire:

"Caprica, the highly anticipated prequel to Battlestar Galactica, will premiere exclusively on DVD on April 21 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment, SCI FI Channel announced. The feature-length prequel will be available on DVD as a limited-edition uncut and unrated version before the series' broadcast premiere on the SCI FI Channel in 2010.

Caprica is executive-produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) and Remi Aubuchon (24). The DVD will carry a suggested retail price of $26.98. Universal Cable Productions will begin production on the Caprica series in the summer in Vancouver for a 2010 television premiere.

The DVD will also include bonus features that take viewers behind the scenes of the creation of Caprica. The film will also be available at selected online destinations for digital download transactions.

Here's how SCI FI describes the series: Caprica begins a new epic saga that continues the franchise's commitment to thought-provoking storytelling and extraordinary characters. Set more than 50 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica is a world at the peak of its power, grappling with new science and technologies and the issues they create.

The series will star Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly Walker."

Wow! This is huge news! But what does it mean to the futrue of the show itself? It is unheard of to release a pilot direct to DVD, let alone 1 year before the series premiere. Is SciFi Channel trying to gauge the popularity of the show before they really sink money into production? It would seem that way. How will fans take to yet another pilot that is shown light years before it's actual episode runs? This and many more questions will be answered on April 21, 2009!

I was going to write something last night but was waiting to hear from the Admiral who has been MIA the last few days.

I'm so stoked about this news. I read the script I posted a while and was dreading that we'd have to wait a year until we saw the pilot.

This is fantastic news. Yes, strange, unheard off, and risky...but to be able to have 2 hours of Caprica about 2 months from now...that's fantastic news indeed!

I truly hope that SciFi's bet goes through successfully on this one because I just know Caprica is going to be an absolutely fantastic show worthy to share the stage with Battlestar Galactica.

I think I have a Corvette event that day but if so I will be stopping by Best Buy on the way back to pick up a copy to watch that evening. It seems like for the next few months we are doing something every 21st with the corvette club. OH well it is fun to GTG with all the other Vette owners and go for a ride. Wink

Just found that Amazon is taking pre-orders on Caprica. I'm going to wait until April 21 gets closer to decide where I'm buying mine.
