Episode 420 : Daybreak Part 1

By Major A-Dog

We begin with a montage of visions...the Universe, a dove flying against a sun filled backdrop, a sunrise over Caprica and finally water falling. We hover in over Caprica City "before the fall." Adama is going over his lifetime acheivement record with an official. He's being told to do something that will cost him an hour of his life yet Adama obviously feels the task is beneath someone whose had his amount of experience and responsibility. We then zoom in on a limo carrying our beloved Dr. Gaius Baltar and Caprica Six, whom at this particular point in time seems to have just met Gaius. They discuss how he likes to have everything done for him while she prefers to rely as little as possible on others. They then make out in the back seat as the telltale music and bells that signifies Caprica Six's melody rings out. Gaius then gets a phone call that agitates him extremely. Flash to Laura Roslin laughing with her sisters after a baby shower for the one. Roslin looks young and so radiant and alive. We are then in an apartment that houses Kara Thrace. She is cooking and hears the doorbell. She answers it and we see the first ever face to face meeting of Kara and Lee. Kara calls for Zak Adama and FINALLY we get an alive Zak in the mix. Back at Baltar's house a nurse is livid and leaving the house after Gaius' father has stabbed her with an ink pen. His father is a real pip and quite funny all the while insulting Gaius to no end. Caprica Six tries to calm Baltar down to no avail and he sends her home. Laura Roslin's door bell rings. It's the Caprican Police. They come in and quite unceremoniously inform her that her sisters and her father were killed by a drunk driver. Roslin loses it and walks to the park in her pajamas. She wades into the fountain and lets it rain down on her. As the visions end we see an IV dripping and are jolted back to the reality that Roslin does not have much time left to live.

Down in the hangar deck Lee is overseeing the stripping down of the Galactica. Many captains are making exaggerated requests for equipment. Lee tell Dealino that they should save the magcellerators for last.

In Baltar's quarters Head Six tells Baltar that his time has finally come and that humanity's end is almost near. We flash back again and we see Baltar womanizing again as he finds Caprica Six has "broken" into his house. She says she's found a new place for his Dad to live. Gaius is all ears as she tells him all about it and then leaves.

Starbuck is working on cracking the pattern to the notes and the song to no avail. Tigh is giving directions to Hoshi who is wiping up a spilled coffee in the CIC. Helo and Chief are in the brig discussing how the Eights are and aren't all the same.

On the Colony, Cavil is discussing how special Hera is and how they intend to find out. Hera hasn't eaten in days and Boomer shows her maternal instincts to get Hera help.

Hot Dog is carrying Nicky through the halls and he drops the pictures of fallen pilots from the memorial wall. He didn't want to leave them behind. Adama helps him pick them up and then realizes he can't leave Hera behind.

Baltar is requesting a seat in the new government for "his" people. He requests just 5 minutes of Lee's time to explain his request and Lee grants it.

Adama and Starbuck are discussing the notes Hera wrote in Sam's room. Adama asks her if what Gaius said was true about her dying. She confesses it as truth and then plugs Sam in so Adama can ask some questions. In a real feel good moment, Adama tells Starbuck that he knows what she is...his daughter. As she plugs Sam in, he has a flash back to an interview he did on TV after a Pyramid game. He talks about how all he cares about is the "perfect" moment. He then speaks Hybridese to Starbuck and Adama as follows:

"Spins and turns. Angles and curves. The shape of dreams half remembered. To slip the surly bonds of Earth and touch the face of perfection. A perfect face, a perfect lace. Find the perfect world for the end of Kara Thrace. End of line."

Baltar is pleading his case to Lee regarding the new life he wants to lead and that he wants the people he represents to have a voice in the government. Lee doesn't buy it and asks Baltar to give one example of the one time he did anything that didn't serve the needs of Gaius "Frakking" Baltar. Baltar says he doesn't blame Lee as he wouldn't trust himself either.

We are then flashing back with Lee supposedly the next morning after getting wrecked all night with Kara and Lee. He's chasing a dove that has somehow gotten into his apartment.

On the hangar deck Adama and Starbuck run a long line of red tape down the deck. Adama says he was wrong to not go after Hera and that anyone that wants to volunteer to go on a mission to save her may do so. Helo tells Athena that they're going for Hera. Helo is pumped but Sharon thinks Cavil has already killed her.

Roslin is flashing back to a phone conversation with a friend regarding blind dates and her distaste for going on long campaigns for President Adar. She gets out of her hospital bed, puts her wig and clothes on and joins Adama on the volunteer side of the hangar deck. Adama tells everyone to make their decision. Baltar almost goes but in true to Baltar form, stays on the side to not go. Chief looks at Tory and says "as if you got something better to do" and pulls her with him on the volunteer side.

Racetrack and Skulls are doing recon to the new proposed Colony site and find it sitting right next to a black hole. The command team (which fantastically includes Lee Adama back in uniform) decides on the best plan to get there and mount an attack.

To Be Continued...

I teared up in this episode also, so I think that means it was a good episode if it evoked such strong feelings.

I'm going to be a total wreck next Friday...

I wonder if Sam has something to do with Adama's renewed confidence in taking the Galactica into one final battle.

I guess I was right, Sam did have something to do with Adama taking the Galactica to find and rescue Hera.

Sam's quote "Spins and turns, angles and curves, the shape of dreams half remembered.  Slip the surly bonds of Earth and touch the face of perfection, a perfect face, a perfect lace, find the perfect world for the end of Kara Thrace.  End of Line"

I wonder what this prophecy shall mean for our weary travellers and Starbuck

I felt sad for Doc Cottle, not being able to go, I admire him for the fact that he wanted to go but also I understand why Adama did not want him to go.  Doc Cottle is probably the chief medical officer for the fleet, losing him in battle would severely cripple the medical infrastructure the fleet currently has, and he is probably one of the most important people in the fleet right now.

Baltar on the other hand hasn't changed, still thinking of himself, he could have broken all of Lee's preconceptions of him by joining the rescue of Hera but no he decided to stay behind with his flock.

As for the Adama flashback, I think I am beginning to understand it on some level.  I think what it tells us is that there are somethings we have to do regardless of whether we want to do it or not,  I think that is the message being conveyed with Adama deciding to go after Hera, and that is what I got from the flashback.

Now we get a glimpse of how Caprica Six endeared herself on Baltar.  It was through helping his father.

I must say that Baltar's father is a cantankerous old man, and somewhat spiteful that his son has forsaken his heritage.

It was nice to see Bodie Olmos get some screen time with his father and have some dialogue with him.

 Cool

Yet another awesome episode.  I don't want the series to end, but I can't wait until Friday.  Looks like it's going to be one hell of a battle.

I found myself waiting for Baltar to step over the line and do his "one selfless thing", but I wasn't surprised when it happened.  I was pleasantly surprised by Doc Cottle, with a few exceptions, we've never really seen him out of medical.  I think it was very appropriate for him to step forward and for Adama to send him back.

OK just a quick one since I have only watched it once so far.
I think Adamas flash back reminded him what he lost in his son. That is allowing him to look at it as a father rather than an admiral. The old man is loosing everything that is dear to him, his woman, his ship, his people, Earth so he has nothing to loose. He is doing one selfless act to help one little girl and her parents to let him, Roslyn, and the Galactica go out with a bane and in a blaze of glory.
As for Baltar, Yes if he had crossed the line it would have been a real shocker and against his nature but I do think the writers have a Gods plan for him. He is in a way of thinking a profit of God and leading the people to there salvation. I think he will be a big player on Friday.
I really want to know the answer to all the head people and Starbuck. If these are not answered next week I will be really upset with things. I know we only have 2 hours to finish up the story line and very few answers have been given to us yet. That is not a lot of time to hit everything. I can’t help but feel we will be disappointed by the ending. I know we are going to see a huge fight and some serious CG but other than that I am lost unless this is going to lead up to TOS Battlestar. Let me try to remember the words said in TOS. “The Cylons were made by another race and they rebelled against them killing them all off, now they want to kill all sentient life.” (Apollo explaining to Boxy about the Cylons.)
At any rate this will be interesting.

I really dig the finale so far. Not a lot happened other than exactly what we saw in the teaser as far as plot goes. What I really found interesting were the Caprica Flashbacks. They add so many layers to the characters and shows just how much they lost and changed. Or in Roslin's case how much she gained. She had no one until Galactica.

I'm holding my final reactions since this was only hour one of what is suppose to be a three hour finale. I'm getting anxious that no answers are coming. ThoughI suspect that something is going to happen concerning "All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again" and the Opera House.

Still though are they going to find a planet to settle on in two hours? The only thing I can see is if they do some kind of flash forward thing like how Six Feet Under ended. Like snap shots of what happens to who ever survives.

BTW I caught a really cool TOS connection with the opening shot. I'll post something later in the TOS thread.

OK I am writing after watching a few times and trying to pick up on as much as I can. Rather than do something like I usually do I’m just going to expand on my notes so it will be in more chronological order of the show. I have also watched the special that was on Monday night and it had some hints in it as well. I am starting off with that.

They hinted in the special that Adama was going to fly the last viper off Galactica. This leads me to believe that even if she gets destroyed as I suspect he will be the last one off the ship like a good Commander of a ship.
There is some footage of the Galactica blowing up so I guess that yes she is done for next week. LOL
There was some mention of Athena, Heilo and Hera having something special in the end. I think this about guarantees they will survive Friday night.
There was a clip of Adama screaming his head off about having a Cylon tied into his CIC. I guess that means Anders will be the Hybrid for Galactica and get left behind on her.
RDM said that head 6 is a divine messenger to Baltar. Back to my beings of light theory.

Now onto my thoughts on Daybreak part 1.
Now my first observation is more of a question. Things open up with Adama in a business suit being interviewed by a man. He is saying he has been a commander of 2 Battlestars and a cruser blab la bla and the man told him it’s just an hour of your life. It seemed like an interview of some kind but what for? Is it talks for the decommissioning of the Galactica?
In the Part where Baltar had to go take care of his father his dad was talking about how ashamed he is for changing his accent and such denying his roots. Baltar reacted saying something about being sick of hearing his working man conspiracy etc. It sounds to me like he was yelling at his father for things that are in the manifesto he later wrote while in jail. Again not an original idea but something to benefit him. I also put something else together. Now I may be crazy but Baltar’s father had one heck of an Irish accent and when Baltar a while back spoke the way he use to before he learned how not to talk with an accent he had an Irish accent. Now he speaks with a British accent. This is kind of like the struggle that took place in the potato famine when all the Irish left there homes for America in search of a better place to live. Back then the Irish were compared to freed slaved only white. A lot of them changed there names to an English or Scottish name and tried to change there accent so they wouldn’t be looked down upon and could have a better chance to make a better life in America. Kind of reminds me of Baltar’s whole thing about Tauron being the poor farmer Colony and Caprica running everything. It may be nothing but it does have the whole it has happened before and it will happen again theme.
Now onto the flash back to Starbuck and Zack. She pointed out how Lee was the worst lire she had ever seen and Zack confirmed it and also said that he was also known to steal his girlfriends. It makes me think about how Lee and Starbuck hooked up and such. Also why he is such a goodie goodie all the time and is not good at pulling a bluff.
Another thing I just noticed and it may have been mentioned before and I have just been missing it. As they showed Starbuck apartment on Caprica it made me remember the place they were holding he on New Caprica. It was set up exactly the same. Different furniture and such but it was of the same lay out. Not that it makes any difference but it is interesting just the same.
I did catch something very simple in the scene where Adama was packing up all his stuff to go to the Baseship He paused as he prepared to pack a picture It was a picture of a little boy and I think Zack. I think this was leading up to the thought of rescuing Hera.
Head 6 told Baltar “she is right, Humanity is at its final chapter and you will be its author.” This along with what was said by RDM in the special leads me to believe that God of whatever has a plan for Baltar to survive to write a book perhaps a bible of some kind about everything.
Now just another observation here on a flash back. When Caprica 6 was in Baltar’s house waiting for him I think it was before they were involved, they were just getting ready when he got the call from his fathers nurse. He was visibly upset and not reacting like he was caught cheating like in the mini series. She had told him about what she did for his father and such and was a very slick was to get to him so she could gain his trust to get into the Colonial defense system.
Now onto the Colony. It looked rather primitive with the rock like structure and such like it was build within an asteroid or something. May be nothing but could make it hard to get into. Also the Cylon doctor I am sorry I can’t remember what they call him he was looking like he is starting to question Cavil. It may be a possibility that he and Boomer will break Hera out as Galactica comes in. I know the colony is going to be next to impossible to get into strategically speaking. This may be the only way this can work.
The shot of Adama standing in the hatch with the light over his head shadow directly under him before he turned around and got Athena and Hera’s picture was like a cowboy at high noon about to get in a showdown. I think this is when he finally made up him mind to go in for the rescue.
Anders has a perfection thing going on from the back flash when he was getting interviewed. Then when he comes back on line he is talking about geometric things and perfection then said something very clear about finding the perfect world for the end of Kara Thrace. Now that left me saying WTF??? I guess somehow he is going to find the new home world for everyone?
Now there is something significant about the scene of Lee chasing down the bird while he was drunk but I can’t figure it out. They showed it at the beginning of the show and again when he had is flash back. Interesting I think but may not be important.
Lee mentioned on the phone to whom ever he was talking to that any former Colonial officer crewmen etc who is in jail will go on the mission. This means people who were in the mutiny. I wonder where this will take us. We already saw the Raptor crew who were part of the Gaeta Mutineers.
Finally When Adama had everyone at the hanger deck looking for volunteers it shows Baltar looking like he it trying to make up his mind. At first I thought he was thinking about doing his 1 selfless act but then I noticed he was watching Caprica 6 the whole time. I don’t think he was pondering on if he should go or not but rather trying to get her to stay behind. I do still feel he is in love with her.
Well that is my bit here. I haven’t read anything on here about all this since my last post. As I said before I needed to watch it again before diceting it to post. I am sure I am WAY too late for the fan of the week thing but that is just fine. I have fun doing this every week.
OH and one last thought. There was talk of at least 1 Battlestar movie. I think it may be something to fill in the gaps during the flash back sequences. It would be interesting to see at least.
One last funny thing. I don’t think Vince from Sham WOW would have liked the scene of the coffee getting cleaned up with limited success. LOL
