I disagree.

Firstly, we'd have gotten twice as much whining over the ending as we already have ("But a battlestar would have degraded over 150,000 years! You wouldn't be able to detect its outline! It couldn't have crashed on Earth anyway! If it landed the crew would have stripped it down after landing. whine whine whine. AKK stop choking me!")

More importantly though it wouldn't add much to the storyline in return for what it took away. Suppose in 10 years time archaeologists do excavate those mounts. Now what we have is an obviously false ending. The real beauty of the BSG ending is that it could be true.
