Hey guys,
The original soundtrack (that i composed with my brother)of the motion picture "Martyrs" from Pascal Laugier should be released in the coming weeks as the movie was released on DVD and BLURAY in Europe and should hit the screens in the U.S next month (i'll re-check the release date and let you guys know).

"...The music ranges from creepy ambient to acoustic balladry,as well as 70's symphonic compositions, all of which adds an extra emotional depth to the film. The main theme is particularly effective as the soft melodies and contextual lyrics are a stark contrast to the film’s hard imagery..." (Rodney perkins/ TWITCH)

We are still in the process of mastering the album but should be done with it some time this week.
The entire score will be available for download for free from our official website.

I'll post the link right here in a  few days! Wink

In the meantime you can check out this link below if you want to know a little more about the soundtrack:
http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/the-cortez-brothers-on-creating-the-martyrs-soundtrack/

And there is a little preview of the score, Enjoy!
(It might take a few seconds for the tracks to load as they are in high quality, so please be patient... Wink)

1-Your witness (main theme)

2-orphans games

3-Gabrielle part 2 (gabrielle's theme)

P.S: feedback is welcome! Smiley

hey.
at first i have to say the following: i play drums, but in no way do i know something about melody or harmony or things like that, im the rythm kind of guy, i cant provide a "that chord goes well with that chime because of the #b *insert more mccreary-ish blabla here*..." review.
nor do i know anything about the movie, its the first time i heard of it.
but i know this: the soundtrack of a movie has to transport the atmosphere and feelings of said movie.
and after i listened to the music, i thought its either a horror or a psychological-mystery-drama kind of thing.
i then went to IMDB.com, read some info about it (not too much, maybe i wanna see that movie and dont wanna be spoiled) and that confirmed my assumption, that it takes the horror/mystery/drama-road.
so you achieved the "transport the atmosphere" part.

i have to say, i really like "your witness". it has the desperate and depressive feeling i like (they call me "mr. depressive", cause i always listen to massive attack and type o negative Smiley) and as little as i know about melody: i like its basic but solid melody and its lyrics.

"gabrielle" is a good "uh-oh, something is about to happen"-horrorish piece of music.

"orphans games". now this.. id need to see the scene of the movie to judge it. i could take a guess whats happening in that scene, because of the name of the song and its overall feeling: the movie tries to establish the lonesome life of orphans that dont play games but look out of the window into a grey and desolate world or something similar.

and thats my "problem": i really need to see the pictures that go along with the music to judge the score. ever heard of synaesthesia? im one of the lucky ones (yes, i think im frakking lucky with that gift), so the magic of a good score happens (for me) if it can connect to the pictures i have in my mind. for instance: i always see a yellowish flash flying through blueish fog when the bagpipes of "storming new caprica" start at approx. 2:12 in the song. if a score achieves this, i admire it.

to make it short: "your witness" already made its way into my playlist and i really wanna see that movie now!

perhabs this sentence would have been enough, but i thought i give you taste (and something to laugh) of my bumpy english Wink.

hey coop,
Thank you so much for your reply! you got it all right!
The whole idea was basically to give it that 70s type of scoring like in dario argento's film and then the score transforms into a more modern scoring as the movie is devided in "2 parts"! (i will say no more Wink)
The movie is more of a drama then a horror film, however it is extremely violent but not in a fun way like "hostel" or "saw"!
The idea was to show what "violence"  really is! (... if you now what i mean...)
Anyway, if you liked let's the right one in , you should love this one! however you have to be prepared for the film's hard imagery.
Thanx you so much for your comment mate, it means a lot to me!  Wink

its a bit sad, nobody else says something to this. hey guys, weve got a score-composer right in our midst, give him some feedback!

Anyway, if you liked let's the right one in , you should love this one!
after you mentioned "let the right one in", "martyrs" is a must-see for me. but theres the language problem. obviously this movie is french (the only french sentence i know is "voulez vous coucher avec moi" *coughcough*) and so i have to ask: is the synchronisation a good one? are the subs ok? the dvd-version of "let the right..." had some serious problems, cause the subs of the theater version and the ones of the dvd-version (US-version) are completely different (the dvd ones are kinda stupid). and i dont want to talk about the german synch.

however you have to be prepared for the film's hard imagery.
ha... *remembers the days when he watched splatter movies, the girls invited had to puke and coop sat there, eating ravioli.sigh, those were the days...*
but as you mentioned, it seems to be a more "mature" way of violence, more like "eeek, thats harsh" than "haha, thats bloody".

i had a look at your myspace page and i have to say, there are some nice tracks to listen to. i like the mix of styles, lil bit electronic, lil bit metal-ish and then the quiet tracks. my favourite styles are breakbeat/bigbeat/triphop (already mentioned: massive attack. and my definition of "THE" song: prodigy - their law. breakbeat + metal. unbeatable. or if you know fear factory - remanufacture - national panel beating), so its no wonder i like the "light" break-/offbeat of "distorted reality show". some others were good, too, forgot the names and right now (7 a.m., im up for 24 hours now (including a 20 km walk)) im too lazy to search for the page again Wink.
ah yes, the score for ... erm.. "eden lost"? sounds solid, too. but, again, id need to see the pictures to really judge it.

nice work, thumbs up, keep it up!

hehe...kool mate! thx for visiting our myspace page! i'm glad you like the diversity of our tracks! messing up with different styles of music is what we do!;)
To answer your question:the subs should be ok, and the other film is called "eden log"!  Tongue there are two different versions of EDEN LOG out there,  an english version (proper, not dubbed) and a french version of course; we managed to make both versions as there are few dialogues.
But i guess you should go for the french version with english subs.
MARTYRS has french audio only but the subs should be ok, the dvd is coming out in the U.S at the end of the month so you should be able to find a good copy on the web somewhere, sometime soon...

Cheers mate  Grin

P.S: yeah...it's a bit sad that no one else but you left a comment on this thread, as i always followed everyone else's projects posted on this site!  Cry
But hey...

Apologies Skull, i was really busy with reallifetm and catching up with things from my 2months PC abstinence... Cry

The trailers look interesting, and i'll check the movie out, it's perfect for a date... Grin Wink

I like the score, espacially the tracks "Your Witness" and Orphans games" ( it sounds like it was written for a Tarantino movie [/compliment] ).

"Gabrielle", well, what cooper said, it also reminds me on a friend. Her name is Gabrielle and she works at the butchers, and she always has a large knife...but i'm derailing... Grin

I think the score is a very important part of a movie, it underlines certain situations and transports emotions,
try to imagine BSG without music, the scene with Adama and Lee in "Hand of God", without the score "A good lighter", or the Star Wars movies ( the ending of ep VI ) for instance.

Can't judge the movie yet, but the tracks i heared so far are truly awesome.
I'll get the score asap, i want to hear the rest. Smiley

Congrats Skull, great work!

Can you post/ PM me the link to your myspace site?

that's it! MARTYRS' dvd and bluray finally hit the U.S yesterday! Grin
Good to see that we had loads of good reviews so far, and here is one of them:
http://www.thelightningbugslair.com/2009/04/terrifying-tuesday-martyrs-2008.html?showComment=1241029620000#c4298969068453612149

Enjoy! Wink

"...Adding to this feeling of disquiet is the score by Alex and Willie Cortes. Like most great scores it enhances the scenes and serves to build tension. It never distracts from the action, and from now on when I hear the main theme from the film, it’s quiet, simplistic tones will instantly bring me back to the feelings I experienced during Martyrs. To me this is what a film score should do, and I will be eagerly awaiting future work from these composers... " (www.thelightningbugslair.com)
